Most of what we sell does not exist until you order it. That is the reason the furniture is configurable and the reason it takes time. Here is the whole timeline, and what happens at each step.

These are build-and-dispatch times, not doorstep dates. Freight transit and delivery scheduling come after, and the carrier arranges that with you directly.

Note the gap between the top row and the rest. A pillow is not built to order in any meaningful sense -- it is picked and shipped. A sofa is cut, framed, sprung and upholstered for you. If your order mixes the two, the fast items are not held back waiting for the slow one.

The timeline, step by step

Before you order: configure and sample

Day 0: you place the order

Your configuration is recorded exactly as selected on the product page.

Within 24 hours: your cancellation window

Orders can be canceled within 24 hours of placement, subject to a 5% cancellation fee. Beyond that, cancellations are not permitted, because production begins shortly after order confirmation. Weeks 1-10: the build

The piece is made in America -- leather furniture is designed and benchmade in North Carolina. During this period the specification is fixed. This is not an arbitrary policy: the hide has been cut.

Dispatch: the carrier contacts you

Once your order is ready, the carrier gets in touch to arrange delivery. For freight items you will get a call roughly 48 hours ahead of the delivery itself, and someone needs to be there to sign.

Delivery day

Free curbside delivery is included with every order. Indoor placement is a paid upgrade, and nothing arrives unboxed or assembled. The details matter enough to have their own guide: how furniture delivery works.

What made-to-order means for returns

Because each piece is built to a specification you chose, made-to-order furniture is non-returnable and non-refundable, except where it arrives damaged. This is the trade-off you accept in exchange for getting exactly the configuration you wanted.

It puts real weight on two steps that cost nothing:

• Measure the route in. If a piece cannot be brought into the home, outbound and return shipping plus a restocking fee are deducted. Doorways, hallway turns, stair width, tight corners.
• Order samples. A color you chose from a screen is the most common regret, and it is not a returnable one.

If something does arrive damaged, act immediately: refuse the delivery and note the damage on the delivery document, or -- if you find it after accepting -- notify us within 48 hours with photographs and a description.

Planning around a deadline

Working backwards is the only reliable method. For a made-to-order sofa needed by a specific date, count back 10 weeks for the build, then add time for freight transit and for the delivery appointment to land on a day you can be home. Can I change the delivery address mid-build?

Contact us as early as you can. Once the order has shipped, the shipping address cannot be changed or modified.

What is covered if something fails later?

Leather furniture carries a 10-year guarantee on the frame and suspension system.
